Artwork Information Sheet Fourty Five- Rosemary Onadipe's Water Hyacinth

picture of Yemisi Shylon museum

Onadipe’s photograph renders the Epe lagoon as a lush, almost uninterrupted field of water hyacinth, with two figures in a wooden boat cutting into the green expanse through steady, familiar gestures of labour. The camera lingers on textures, fibrous roots, muddied water, and dense foliage creating a visual tension between beauty and obstruction while revealing the plant’s suffocating grip on the landscape. Though grounded in environmental reality, the work reflects on resilience and adaptation, as local communities increasingly transform the invasive hyacinth into usable goods and energy, turning ecological burden into material possibility.
